ssh-1.2.17 compiled fine for me under BSD/os 2.1 and 3.0 beta.
When configuring it, I passed in the '--disable-asm' flag like so:

./configure --with-rsh=/usr/bin/rsh --program-transform-name='s/^s/r/' \
        --disable-asm
