Make sure that you're using the zp driver (not ep). Disable all of the other network cards at boot time. If this still hangs (doesn't for me, but the ep driver *used to*), try switching to VT4 (ALT-F4) and re-configing the card - something like ifconfig zp0 inet 10.0.1.4 netmask 0xffffff00 This should "free" the card - allowing it to continue the transfer.
