My mistake, I thought some modems were able to report their current rate
when interrogated, but after looking through a number of manuals I have
one hand I find that none them appear capable of it. I believe there is at
least on brand that has a front panel display of this...perhaps I'll look
at those again.

Not terribly. I would like to know if my modem is forced to do a lot of
renegotiations and whether it is renegotiating upwards after it falls.
Also if it negotiates upwards beyond the initial connect rate. So if I
could sample it say every 30 minutes or so I'd have a fair picture after a
few days.

You can get info from the chat script but I think you have to set syscon
to log debug info to see it. I suppose I could toggle this on before
dialing and back off after wards but if things are working well I
don't dial that often.

I've been experimening a bit, forcing the thing to refuse anything less
then 26.4 but sometimes that can take forever to achieve. 24 is much more
likely though it will connect at 28.8 on occassion.

This is a dedicated port so I was kind of interested in finding out how
much effort I should be putting into maxximizing the connect speed.

Not really a lot of difference in between 24K and 28.8K I guess but every
little bit helps:)
