I think, if you make it with the SunOS format, the filesystem is not 'modern' enough to support the whiteouts.. you can upgrade the filesystem with "fsck -c [0123]" to the level you want, see the fsck_ffs manpage for more details.. if thats not it, then I don't know what the problem is.. iain
