It's in Epson compatible mode, and doing a "copy file prn" from DOS works fine. However with FreeBSD, a "cat file >/dev/lpt0" results in "Device not ready". Same with Windows NT - it won't even print the test page - device not ready. If it wasn't for the fact that it prints just fine from DOS, I'd say it's the cable, but it can't be. But this garbage, having passed through a very expensive machine, is somehow enobled and none dare criticize it.
