So why the additional linking suggested in the handbook? To keep the working files off /usr while retaining a definite pathname ? On my system, /usr/ports points at /usr/local/ports sort of implying that software installed from the ports are local addons. BTW: I'd like to have a scheme that distinguishes between locally installed but still normally submitted software and completely local programs like private ports and selfmade stuff. Maybe /usr/contrib would be a good place for stuff that normally goes with FreeBSD while not being part of the base system, so /usr/local would be open to truly local stuff. I think Slowlaris has /opt for it (as in optional software). Or, if you stay with /usr/local as it is now, what would be a good name for really local stuff (besides $HOME/bin for private programs) ?
