There a dozen of differences. The main one might be, that
Linux (>2.X) is more SYS V related an FreeBSD ist well just
BSD :-)

: How hard may it be for an Linux user to completely start using BSD ?

Wasn't a big problem for me at least.

: What type of release packages are there available on the net (ex.
: Slackware96 for Linux) ?

There is only one distribution, which comes with a lot of
precompiled ports. You'll get everything you need...

: How stable is BSD compared to Linux ?

We use FreeBSD as our server OS and some Linux boxes for the
workstations. I find FreeBSD more stable as a server than
Linux. Linux is more fun on workstations.

: Is there any good CD-rom releases worth of buying ?

Walnut Creek CD-ROM!

: Where do I find the best applications on the net ?

You can compile most of the programms you find on the net out
of the box. There are a few hundret ports for FreeBSD also.

: What do I need to download from the net to get a complete installation ?

You should take a look at: www.freebsd.org
