The end result is that the drives became invisible (Device not configured) to FreeBSD and nothing other than a reboot would bring them back. The suspected flaky drive has been removed and I am monitoring the system to see if the remaining 4G SCSI drive suffers from the same problem. If it is the drive, it will be the third 4G Seagate Hawk to die out of a total of 6 that we have purchased. This would not instill a great deal of confidence in me regarding the remaining drives. Two of the failures I could possibly attribute to an episode when the building Aircon failed and was off for 3 days during the peak of the summer heat. But since then we have purchased more drives, have installed additional aircon separate from the building system, and bought 4 extra cooling fans to make sure that none of the drives get too hot. In fact, they are now so cool that there is little difference in temp between the 4G drives and the box casing! Has anyone else seen problems with the Seagate Hawk? Tony
