: Your two IDE drives should be wd0 and wd1, not wd1 and wd2.

: Have you tried wd(1,a)/kernel?

Yes I have. The kernel, when I am installing FreeBSD using the boot.flp
image on a floppy reports my second drive as wd2. I ahve a CD-ROM as a
primary slave. The 500M is my secondary master.
