We had a 3C905 installed on our chat server and had to take it out.
We replaced it with an Intel EtherExpress and it's been fine since.

We tried in futility to find out why this was so but at the end we
chalked it up to the fact that the 3C905 was NOT on the supported HW
list for BSDI 2.1.
