Apart from the often mentioned (and thanks to Bruce Evans now fixed)
problem with libm not using the FPU by default, don't forget that all
FreeBSD 2.1.x systems ship with gcc 2.6.3.  Since this is the `stable'
line of our development, it was the word that gcc 2.7.2.1 is too risky
to bring it there, even for FreeBSD 2.1.7.
