As i already wrote you in another newsgroup (which you don't see here since you don't know how to crosspost correctly, apparently), the dump format is (as i recently had to learn *smile*) not that system- dependant. Here's the attempt to read in the dump header of a dump taken on AIX: j@ida 303% /sbin/restore iv Verify tape and initialize maps Tape block size is 32 Note: Doing Byte swapping Dump date: Thu Jun 27 13:08:36 1996 Dumped from: the epoch Note: Doing Quad swapping Extract directories from tape Initialize symbol table. restore > ls .: 2 *./ 23 dev/ 360 lpp/ 524 smit.script 2 *../ 24 etc/ 655 lpp_name 389 tftpboot/ 756 .fs.size 352 export/ 383 mnt/ 16 tmp/ 520 .sh_history 19 home/ 684 opt/ 394 u 390 bin 1075 info/ 1032 root/ 392 unix 393 bootrec 391 lib 384 sbin/ 17 usr/ 1122 cdrom/ 359 lost+found/ 523 smit.log 18 var/ restore > quit As you can see, it decides it needs to do byte and quad swapping, but that's all. -- J"org Wunsch Unix support engineer joerg_wunsch@interface-business.de http://www.interface-business.de/~j
