The best editor is the one you know : how to use. No, the best editor is the one that is Guaranteed to be there on any system you are likely to have to work on. Emacs may be great (although I found it clownish), but in my job which is fixing UNIX boxes, I can always rest safe in the assurance that ed and vi will be there. Even UNIX like clones (Linux) have a vi clone that is at the very least reasonably compliant with the vi command set. That's a big win. If you spend your time fixing Windows boxes then maybe Word is the answer for fixing up autoexec.bat/config.sys/win.ini/system.ini (but I'm prepared to bet that you use 'edit' when available and that you have a freebee copy of qedit around for when its not :-). : A lot of the old editors (vi and emacs - won't even get into ed : and variants) have about a billion keys to remember. If you : know how to use these keys you can fly, but if you don't it's : just a pain to learn them all. They *dont* have a billion keys, they have around half a dozen important ones, but why let facts spoil an argument? : -=- Frederick Haab -=- Software Developer -=- Turner Production -=- -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Graham Broadbridge Internet <grahamb@peachy.apana.org.au> Marsfield NSW AmprNet <vk2yui@gw.vk2yui.ampr.org> Australia <vk2yui@amsat.org> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
