You should really just put the port in /usr/ports/distfiles and type
make install.  It'll extract it itself.

As I said via mail, the install in /usr/ports/*/*/Makefile may do other
things - like call mkfontdir for netscape (disclaimer: this is just
heresay, I've never looked at this Makefile).
