LaTeX is a great tool. If you use Lyx as a front-end it is 
a little like WYSIWYG.
Another approach ist to get the commercial Office-Suite ApplixWare
for Linux which runs well under the Linux-(ELF)Emulation of 2.2Gamma.
ApplixWare is a word-processor, spreadsheet, presentation-graphics
and  mail front-end.
