I had specified the chip explicitly in XF86Config, and the X server choked on it. After commenting out the chipset line and letting XF86_SVGA auto-detect it, I was able to get stable displays at 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 relatively painlessly. I haven't gotten a 24bpp configuration to work yet. Anyone got one of those they would like to share? (5429 chipset, Compaq 150 monitor).
