I use (La)TeX myself especially for larger projects such as my Thesis,
which I would *never* write in WYSIWYG.

I see the need for a WYSIWYG word processor for smaller papers with
lots of stylish hick hack. And I was amaized how much there is!

You can purchase StarWriter and WordPerfect. The clue is that
StarWriter is free for non-commercial use. We need Linux-ELF support
pretty soon to run it. StarWriter is really an alternative to Word,
even on Windoze platforms. See: http://www.stardiv.de/staroffice.

An interesting LaTeX frontend is LyX
http://www-pu.informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/users/ettrich/lyx.html

But a free WYSIWYG thing is under development and already looks
fantastic: http://www.uni-paderborn.de/~SciTeXt. This program could be
up and running next week for all of us, if someone with a MOTIF
installation would produce static binaries and submit it to the
SciTeXt developers, who give away the sources for this purpose.
I fear that LessTif won't work, since the UIL stuff is not compatible
to the MOTIF's original. So, who has MOTIF and is willing to try the
porting?

Two other interesting developments are:

Math(S)Pad http://www.win.tue.nl/cs/wp/mathspad/

and

Cicero http://zeus.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~weis/cicero.html

which both look promising.

enjoy!
