Now I think it's a hardware conflict- with the net connected and operating the FreeBSD box hangs on bootup at the VGA device. Only does it if the other PC (direct over 10base2) is up and trying to connect. At least that's better than a random freeze. I'll try changing IRQs etc and let you know how it goes. Weird because there's just the VGA card, IDE I/O, and the NE2000, and that setup was working fine.
