I have this card & just typed X -probeonly & got no such complaints.
Perhaps you are using the wrong server??  I use XF86_SVGA, it works
great - 256 colors at 1024x768.  Which version of FreeBSD are you
running?  I am still running 2.1.6 & XFree86 3.1.2.
