Bet that those long times are your DNS timing out. Telnet to the
IP, if you get an instant connection then its your DNS. What might
be happenning is the machine cannot contact its DNS server. You might
consider keeping those commonly used IPs in your /etc/hosts file and
make sure that the /etc/host.conf checks the hosts file before consulting
the DNS (bind).
