Here SGI will just ripp you off, for "compatable hardware". Depends on your wants. If you buy everything from one place, be it SGI, Sun, etc. you only have to track down ONE company to complain to if something goes wrong "somewhere" in your system. > > I concure. Plus, with things like memory, you reduce the likelyhood of frying a board due to poorly fitting SIMMs that some 3rd party makers ship. > AFAIK, some third-party SCSI-2 CD-ROMS (e.g. Toshiba) do work on SGI. almost any SCSI-2 CD-ROM drive will "work" with systems like SGIs, Suns, etc. However, you likely won't be able to boot off of them. Due to the way that Unix workstation boot proms view the world (that all the SCSI devices are 512K block devices) most CD-ROMs for PC's will not work as their operating block size is not 512K. Some of the toshiba's can be jumpered to function as bootable devices. Any way, moral of the story: unless you need to boot from the CD, getting an SGI or SUN CD-ROM isnt 100% necessary. And, if you DO need a bootable drive, there are plenty of places on the internet that you can pick up a SGI/Sun-bootable CD-ROM for < $200 (I paid $125 for a 4x a few months ago.) -tom -- Regional Technical Analyst "You frighten me...
