I am trying to build a new kernel using the code in the src01 distribution
the only change was that I added the files for the DEPCA driver
I have not added the patchkit or anything else. after executing
config, make depend, I execute make and all goes well until it says
"loading 386bsd"
"init_main.o: something about an unreferenced symbol _version"
is there a standard fix for this?

Nice of you to mention that you did not add the patchkit.....
because this is patch number ONE (patch00001).
in other words the patch to make all other patches work!
