I tried booting with the monitor disconnected from everything (ie. sitting dead on my desk with the cables dangling uselessly) and it didn't change anything (well, except my resolution). > (totally unrelated, but from your boot sequence...) recompile your kernel > for your hardware and use "shutdown now" before flipping off the power > switch.
