My choice of Linux was based on a number of things. The activity in the
new groups, the availability of books specifically written to help newbies
get things up and running, and finally the useability of the final
installed system. Linux was usable out of the box which let me use it
while learning how it worked. BSD would have forced a much steeper
learning curve on me while I tried to get it to a useful state. Haveing a
nice set of basic applications and a decent X configuration as a default
would have gone a long ways toward convincing me to use BSD. As it was the
choice was pretty clear.
