I've managed to get 2.2 up and running, did a kernel recompile to add support for tcpdump, and NetATalk.. I was pretty surprised how smoothly that worked, I was convinced I would mess it up somehow.. I also managed to get Samba up and working pretty well, but none of this has required any REAL knowledge of what is going on, just a bit of persistence, and reading these oh-so-cryptic man pages.. The NetATalk seems to be a bit more involved, and I can't quite figure out what I need to do with it.. I've read the part about editing the main Makefile in the root of the distr or uncompressed NetATalk directory, but I'm not really sure what I need to do.. when I looked at the file, it had what looked like a DESTDIR variable. $(DESTDIR) and a line DESTDIR=/usr/local/atalk.. Below this it looked like was setting up places to put things.. Like INCDIR=$(DESTDIR)/include.. Well this seemed reasonable enough, so I didn't think I really needed to change anything, but I did notice a commented out section of stuff like : #SBINDIR=/usr/sbin #BINDIR=/usr/bin #LIBDIR=/usr/lib #RESDIR=/usr/lib/atalk #ETCDIR=/etc #INCDIR=/usr/include #MANDIR=/usr/man which seemed to look a bit more like the FreeBSD /usr directory structure.. Anyway, I ran the make and it did some stuff, but nothing ended up over in the /usr area.. I then thought that maybe I needed to run the make from in the sys/freebsd sub-dir, so I tried that also.. So now I seem to have all kinds of stuff in the NetATalk directory structure.. It almost appears as if everything has been made up, but in the wrong places.. IE there is nothing in /usr or /usr/local that looks new or atalk related. I noticed that there were man and man-sub-directories in the NetATalk dir structure, but I don't seem to be able to man anything in these directories.. Any help hints appreciated, but please remember I'm a real newbe at this so try and not be too technical or assume I know very much.. my worst problem with FreeBSD seems to be that most of the man pages, or instructions in general, seem to assume a basic level of knowledge or unix experience, that I'm nowhere near.. The package-add stuff works well for me, kinda like that old pizza commercial, "go to the freezer, get the box", but alas like the commercial, NetATalk is a bit more like making a real pizza..
