I had this problem too (I also have the gateway).  The problem seemed to go away
when I truned off the primary cache.  I can't explain it.  Furthermore, 
yesterday I turned it back on (with a patched kernel) and had no problems.

Give it a try.  BTW, if you know any way of changing the cmos config w/o
booting dos, let me know via Email.
