Install floppy boots to sysconfig, then to sysinstall. Installation
seems to progress normally until:
"Doing newfs -b 8192 -f 1024 /mnt/dev/rwd0s2f"
when system appears to hang indefinitely with fixed disk shuttling
approximately once per second. Same behavior observed both with
attempted FTP install of version 2.1.7-RELEASE and attempted install of
version 2.2-RELEASE from a DOS partition.
Hardware configuration is:
Packard Bell 2011 Multi-Media with Intel 80486SX-33MHz processor on ISA
bus -- Phoenix A486 BIOS version 1.01.E dated 04/19/90, extended video
BIOS Cirrus Logic GD5422/5424/5426/5428 VGA BIOS version 1.30 dated
07/08/93.
Matsushita 563-X CD-ROM drive on port x0630, connected through a
Forte-16 sound board.
Track ball configured as serial mouse on sio1/COM2 IRQ 3.
SupraExpress 288i PnP modem on sio2/COM3 IRQ 4 (initialized in DOS
before reboot to the FreeBSD install floppy).
3.5" floppy and 2.5GB fixed disk connected to system board controller.
Fixed Disk Information:
Maxtor model 82625 A6, firmware revision 7A3D1786, 5100 cylinders,
16 heads, 63 sectors/track controlled by Micro House EZ-BIOS rev 1/97.
EZ-BIOS translates the geometry to 637 cylinders, 128 heads, 63 sectors.
DOS FDISK.EXE reports partition information as:
Partition Status Type Volume Label Mbytes System Usage
C: 1 A PRI DOS DOS_BOOT 512 FAT16 20%
2 Non-DOS 512 20%
3 EXT DOS 1481 80%
Total disk space is 2504 Mbytes
PFDISK.EXE reports:
#Partition table on device: 0

# ID First(cyl) Last(cyl) Name # start, length (sectors)
1 6 0 129 DOSbi # 63, 1048257

3 5 260 635 DOSex # 2096640, 3032064
4 0 0 0 empty # 0, 0

IDE_CONF.EXE shows:
BIOS reports drive has 637 cyls, 128 heads, 63 secs/trk
Controller reports drive has 5100 cyls, 16 heads, 63 secs/trk
Resetting controller/drive

And that's as far as it goes. I have to do a manual reset or power cycle
reboot to regain control of the box.
If I set the FreeBSD partition active, the box will come up to the Boot:
prompt, complain that it cannot find the kernel, and auto-reboot
ad-nauseum.
I have tried booting the floppy after the EZ-BIOS installs; booting
directly from the floppy; and booting directly from the floppy, changing
the geometry in the partition editor to reflect the physical geometry.
All have the same result.
I have checked the FAQ posted in this group earlier this month, the FAQ
on www.freebsd.org, the manual posted on www.freebsd.org, etc. to no
avail.
Am I missing something, or will FreeBSD simply not install on my system?
Any help would be appreciated, before I try Linux (my next Unix-like
choice).
