I'm personally using pcvt with a _really_ twisted keyboard layout.
However, whenever i install a new system (or a test-installation
etc.), what i'm usually selecting is:

. german iso keyboard layout (now early in the installation,
it gets into effect immediately within sysinstall)
	. iso8859-1 fonts

For an MDA screen, you can't download fonts of course, so _instead_
install a screenmap from iso8859-1 to ibm437.

All these are now options in sysinstall. I never bother to make the
respective entries into /etc/sysconfig by hand.

Finally, you might want to change your TERM variable from cons25 to
cons25l1 (Latin-1 support). That's in /etc/ttys.
