I'm new to U**X but not PCs or networking. I'd appreciate any help even
if it's just a pointer to the FAQ. I installed FreeBSD a week ago. I
DL'd the boot disk image and installed via FTP (modem PPP link to my
ISP) no probs except I have a PS2 mouse port and need to compile a
custom kernel to enable it, but I didn't get the source code in the orig
install. So I get that and try to copy GENERIC to MYKERNEL (logged in
as root of course) and I get "cp: permission denied". I'm a bit hesitant
to just go and edit GENERIC. I thought root could do anything. Any
guesses?
problem 2: I want to set up the FreeBSD box to handle forwarding and IP
aliasing acting as a gateway on my home LAN to my ISP. I got the
tutorial for doing this, but problems remain. The tutorial mentions
the "-alias" argument for loading "ppp". The version of "ppp" that I
got doesn't seem to support this. All I get is a "usage" nag when I try
to use it. I've only been able to ftp successfully through the
/stand/sysinstall utility and then only when I connect to my ISP using
"term" with ppp in interactive mode. I wrote a chat script that reports
"connect success" and "login success" but the "ppp on" prompt doesn't
change to "PPP ON" like it does when I connect using "term" It just
changes to "ppp ON", it does go into packet mode either way. when I use
sysinstall to add distributions via ftp, there's a screen that lets me
fill in the gateway and DNS server of my ISP. Where can I configure this
for the system? I've gone through the handbook for info on configuring
static routes, but at no time does it mention where (which file) static
routes are defined, or what the syntax is. I have /etc/hosts set up, as
well as /etc/networks, but I need to set the ppp link as the interface
for the outside world. I guess I also need to get my ISP's DNS server/s
address in there somewhere too.
problem 3: I was warned about this before I loaded FreeBSD, but I went
ahead anyway... I've started spending way too much time at the console
and have every once in a while (like when something actually works)I
experience outbursts of maniacal laughter. Will this eventually go away?
or does it just get worse?
