About the only thing, IMO, that is rock solid is the Archive (now Seagate) VP-150 (i.e 2150L and VP-402). The best you can get though is 250 Mb with DC6250 tapes. The problem is that the QIC-02 drives are only available in the used and refurb market. The bit downside is that the VP-402 takes a precious IRQ and DMA channel from the 8-bit portion of the ISA bus. Many of us don't have those hardware resources to spare so we very readily opt for SCSI.
