I thought root could do anything. Any > guesses? I'm not sure about the copying bit - strange. The only thing that root "can't" do in this respect is explained in the "chflags" manual page. What you really want to do is boot with the -c option and enable the ps/2 mouse - it's there, just not enabled by default. > problem 2: I want to set up the FreeBSD box to handle forwarding and IP > aliasing acting as a gateway on my home LAN to my ISP. Packet aliasing isn't in 2.1.*, and the handbook may be a bit wrong in this respect (in 2.1.*). You want version 2.2 - things get better. You may be able to get the current ppp stuff to work if you download it from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/usr.sbin/ppp and you can get the good examples from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/etc/ppp/ppp.*.sample Not for the feint of heart. > problem 3: I was warned about this before I loaded FreeBSD, but I went > ahead anyway...
