"You might think" about switching from the shotgun to the : rifle. Ron is definitely not the one who's been "flaming [your] ass : off". You are absolutely right. I mixed up one of Peter Berger's messages with one of Rons and incorrectly got on Ron's case. I already apologized in private mail, but I'll do the same here. I'm sorry about flaming you, Ron, you're Ok in my book. Peter, on the other hand, seems worth a flame or two, but this thread is making my carpal tunnel worse so I'm gonna pass on that. Ron, by the way, pointed out that it appeared like I was stonewalling on some aspects of this whole topic. As I replied to him privately, I didn't immediately point out that the lmbench paper was a survey of a large number of systems (as opposed to a X vs Y comparison) because I thought that was obvious. Quite frankly, and I'm sure the FreeBSD guys will disagree, it never occurred to me that anyone would read the paper and think it was a comparison between Linux and FreeBSD. So I just didn't think to say "hey, it's a survey" as my first reply. I should have. Maybe it would have defused the whole topic. Probably not, but who knows? -- --- Larry McVoy lm@sgi.com http://reality.sgi.com/lm (415) 933-1804
