Also check i/f selection if there's > a choice of thin-wire/aui/tp, etc. We've played with this a bit - the cards are soft config and seem to be detected by the kernal on boot. I've tried configuring an Intel EtherExpress16 card, but the kernal won't even recognize it. > 127.0.0.1 is a local loop that never touches the hardware... No kidding - that's why this is weird.
