Think it over, okay? Couldn't agree more... The "Grand Unification Theory of the Unix Universe" has been tried before and, for the most part, failed miserably! Why? Because the public "marketing hype" has not been backed up by technical and engineering commitment by the organisations involved. The OSF is the 'classic' example. DEC appears to be the ONLY major "commercial" Unix vendor to use the OSF kernel. All the other members of the consortium made noises but then only picked and chose those bits of the OSF engineering effort that they particularly wanted! This doesn't mean that OSF was an absolute failure but it certainly DID NOT result in a Unified Unix which is why we still need the Posix and SVID specs to at least get some order for applications developers. Throwing a tantrum and saying "unify or I'll go and buy Uncle Bill's software" will only result in you get a raised central digit response. The simple fact is that 99%+ of those that buy M$ software will do so REGARDLESS of the situation in the *BSD Operating System camp. A unified BSD is not going to change that! Setting up a CORE BSD Engineering group simply requires more political will and money (to pay Engineers) then is currently available, and even then I doubt that you could stop splinter groups forming!!! > > -- > Thor Lancelot Simon tls@rek.tjls.com > > Most things do not correlate with actual behavior. > -George Conklin Tony
