Maybe there's a problem with your UART, modem or ISP. I've downloaded single files for 40Mb before over ppp. Try setting some debug options in ppp.conf - say set debug Phase LQM LCP Link I'd also suggest using the "pmdemand" example in ppp.conf.sample (2.2).
