Microsoft hired the programming team that developed VAX/VMS from DEC, and had them write an operating system for "New Technology" (NT). NT can support DOS processes in a special emulation mode, but underneath that is a real operating system with protected memory and preemptive processes. I'm not all that fond of NT, but to give credit where it is due, NT is lightyears beyond DOS and Windows. -Eugene
