It appears that my system which uses Ethernet for local (in-house) networking,
and SLIP for remote network (including Internet) connection, was having an
identity crisis of sorts.

When I would start up "X -query <remote host running XDM> <other options>",
X would start up, and just sit there. Looking that the XDM log on the remote
machine showed that it thought that it was talking to the hostname associated
with my Ethernet card (both hostnames are DNS registered).

I am not sure just WHY this happens, but to get XDM to work, I disabled the
Ethernet interface, unassigned its IP address, added an IP alias of this
second address to my SLIP interface, and voila! - I am now able to get the
remote XDM's login and window manager.

I had played around with adding/changing routes and ARP entries in both
machines - but to no avail. I also tried to make route/ARP changes in the
terminal server that I connect to, but also to no avail. I also had tried
changing Xaccess, Xservers, and Xsession - again to no avail.

In the end, it appears that my XDM problem was some kind of routing problem.
I would like to thank everyone for their various suggestions. My suggestion
to anyone new with XDM - don't bother with the XDM files unless you need
to, and only after you have gotten it to work, so you know what to expect.
