What do you start, X itself? That's really only the server.
What happens when
a) you run startx and
b) your xinitrc (either $HOME/.xinitrc or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc)
contains calls of xterms and a window manager (twm for starting) ?

You can start programs from the .xinitrc (in the background, of course),
from an xterm (a soon as you have on :-) ) or from the window manager's
menus - you can configure this in .twmrc or .fvwmrc or whatever your wm is.

You can switch from X to a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-f[123] and back
to X with alt-f4. Are there error messages on the terminal you startet
X from?
Bye, Philipp
