Did you try this (i.e. startx) as root? I think root's default path doesn't
include the X11 directory (safety reasons, I guess). Or did you try it from
a normal user account and got this error? Then I don't know why... startx is
in /usr/X11/bin  .
My  .login in the normal account contains
set path = (/sbin /bin /usr/sbin /usr/bin /usr/games /usr/local/bin \
/usr/X11R6/b in $HOME/bin)
by default.
