It's already been built for you! Maybe because the first item available on the Web page for extra software IS the Ports directory. One has to know their way around the Web pages to find the Packages directory, and if Packages aren't offered up front on the "home page" but Ports are, why bother? This is also true for FTP access. Besides, not all Ports have an equivalent Package, and it is even more confusing now with the multiple Ports and Packages subdirectories, when you go to the "Getting FreeBSD .." page, and not all applications are available under all associated subdirectories (OS versions). In this case, then, going to the Ports directory from the FreeBSD "home page" is much simpler, even if there may be a ready-to-go package somewhere else. Then again, maybe King Kaos had an entirely different reason for grabbing a Ported verson of an application, rather than its Packaged version?
