It might be that the hardware is initialized to wrong state 
efter the first boot.

Assuming you try to boot off an IDE disk.

Try configuring the IDE disk in various ways (no block
remapping etc), as i don't know which bios hp uses
i cannot give definitive answer here.

The reason is that the bios may offer to remap the disk
to a geometry that DOS can handle, but in that process
confuses bsd - boot.

Most bios are configurable about this. If hp-s is not,
well i would consider that as a reason to switch box.
