You're not talking to something Microsoft by any chance? I've seen
things like this happen when connecting to a NT RAS server. 
Faintly remember is was because of things like NetBIOS or something
trying to negotiate. The grey matter is dim here.

But not to worry, pppd just tells you that it received something it
can't handle. The 'normal' protocols it will use just fine :)
