I have checked the latest FAQs and documentation, but I don't
think this problem is addressed; apologies in advance if this
is a known problem.

In FreeBSD 2.1.5:
I am trying to set up XFree86 with a VGA mono monitor (IBM 4707)
and a generic Trident 8900CL based video card with 1024K Ram.
My problem is with getting a regular old text screen back without
rebooting. X itself is OK.

In particular, if I switch virtual terminals, I can enter commands,
etc., but the screen is black. I can quit X and the screen is still
black. I can restart X (on a black screen), and the desktop appears.
I can do a software reboot and everything is back to normal. Until
I start X again. The _first time_ I try to switch from the X desktop
to a text screen, I see a block cursor in the upper lefthand corner
of the screen for a fraction of a second.

I have used this card with a _Super_ VGA monitor with Linux and
everything works fine (I have upgraded that computer to a S3 ViRGE
card).

The FAQ for the Trident says that any problems with text restoration
that may have existed have been fixed. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Rob Clark, clarkc2@rpi.edu
