The usual answer is: give both a try.  But that's not why i'm writing.
I just wanna point out to you that you shouldn't start with FreeBSD
2.1.7 if you chose FreeBSD, but pick 2.2.1 instead.

p.s.: I don't think you really can get Linus onto your PC (as your
subject line suggests), he's probably too busy writing his thesis
these days. :-))
