Maybe it would help to (re-)load a font with vidcontrol, e.g.
vidcontrol -f 8x16 /usr/share/syscons/fonts/cp850-8x16.fnt
(there are other fonts in this directory, for different resolutions, etc.)
or to load a screenmap with vidcontrol -l /usr/share/syscons/scnmaps/...

Then there's also kbdcontrol -l and keymap files in /usr/share/syscons/keymaps/
