Maybe - depends on whether the other side of your ppp link can 
route directly - if so, you're adding a hop by specifying a default
that's "over there".  Having said all this, I don't think having
a default that's not directly connected is such a good idea.  If
FreeBSD supports it, I suspect you're lucky.  You're really better
off specifying the other side of the ppp link :)

RTFM netstat.
With the 'c' flag, new routes are generated on the fly.  This means
you'll get "temporary" routes to hosts you've recently sent a packet
to.  This is just a routing optimization.

It may be worth looking at http://www.awfulhak.org/ppp.html.  It xrefs
all the ppp docs I know about.
