While you CAN use vidtune to get 80x43 (or whatever) console screens, I have never had a need to change the console since I almost exclusively live and work in X (Solaris has really spoiled me ;) If vidtune doesn't give you a good enough resolution, maybe you can put in a request for a vidtune update?
