Your question has already been answered in a followup, but just for fun, i would ask you the reverse question: if i've already got 8 (well 7 actually) partitions (a, b, d through f), why the heck do i need additional slices? :-) Actually, you'll see me as someone who never uses the fdisk table if it can be avoided. As for 7 partitions, and that's why i'm writing this posting, don't ever touch partition `c'. It's magic, it's simulated by the driver if no disklabel is present, and it always must cover the entire disk (or slice, if you've got an fdisk table).
