FreeBSD is divided only into a few packages (like sources, binaries,
doc, X11R6), since FreeBSD is a "complete" operating system in the
"traditional" way.

The 850 ports of application programs from the FreeBSD ports
collection are completely under package control.

I think you won't miss this, since FreeBSD is a real Unix operating 
system. Not as patchworked, overloaded and bloated as Linux in most 
distributions is.
