What is the firmware revision on the Barracuda (this displays as part of the system boot info if you've got the verbose flag on, or you can get it from /var/db/dmesg.boot)? 0021 or 0022 are current (depending on the drive variant). Also, are you sure you have good SCSI cables and proper active termination? There are a lot of substandard SCSI cables out there.
